Tourist bus or private car in Nepal?

The bus is cheapest and fine for many travellers. A private car costs more but picks you up at your hotel, leaves when you want and stops where you like. Here's how to choose.

Our honest advice

Which one suits you

Take the bus if you're travelling alone or as a couple, have light bags and a flexible day. It's the cheapest way between the main tourist towns.

Take a private car if you're a family or group, have a flight to catch, are going to Lumbini, or want to stop at places like Manakamana or Bandipur on the way. You also skip the taxi from the bus park at each end.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the tourist bus in Nepal safe?

Tourist buses on the main routes are a common way to travel and carry thousands of visitors each season. They are slower than a car and stop at set places, but they suit a lot of travellers.

When is a private car worth the extra cost?

When you are three or more people, travel with children or older relatives, carry a lot of luggage, have a flight to catch, or want to stop along the way. Split between a group, the cost per person gets much closer to bus fares.

Is there a tourist bus from Chitwan to Lumbini?

Not a direct one. Most visitors take a bus to Bhairahawa and change there. A private car goes hotel to hotel in about 4–5 hours.

Can a private car stop at Manakamana or Bandipur?

Yes. You choose the stops. Buses only stop at their set meal and rest points.

Is there something between the bus and a private car?

On the Kathmandu to Chitwan route, yes. You can book a single seat on our shared early-morning car and pay for one seat instead of the whole car.
